Divergent takes place in a dystopian futuristic Chicago in which the society is revolved around five factions. These include Amity, the peaceful, Candor, the honest, Erudite, the intelligent, Abnegation, the selfless, and Dauntless, the brave. When everyone in the society turn sixteen years old, they then take the aptitude test and find out what faction they belong in for the rest of their lives. After the aptitude test comes the choosing ceremony, where they will then make the final decision of permanently choosing a faction, which means choosing to stay with their family with their faction that they grew up in, or go to a different one. After choosing a faction, everyone has to go through training. If some people cannot pass training, they get kicked out and have to live with the factionless.

 

In this story, it's based on a girl named Beatrice Prior who turns sixteen and takes the aptitude test, but finds out that her aptitude test results aren't normal and that she must then decide to either betray her family and choose a different faction, or stay in her original faction with her family, which is abnegation the selfless, although she has never actually felt like she could belong there.

 

Veronica Roth is the author of the book "Divergent" and its second book, "Insurgent". The third, and final book to the trilogy, "Allegiant", which recently came out on October 22nd, 2013. Veronica is also released another short story in Four's perspective, on September 3rd, 2013, titled, "The Transfer: A Divergent Story". There will be three more short stories to follow after as well.

 

Divergent has been made into a movie and released on March 21st, 2014. The second movie, Insurgent, will come out March 20th, 2015. The third movie, Allegiant, will be split into two movies, Part 1 will come out March 18th, 2016, and Part 2 will come out March 24th, 2017.
